Название «керлинг» произошло от «curr», что переводится с шотландского как «рычание». Спорт был так назван, потому что первое время игры проходили на льду замерзших водоёмов, и скользящие камни издавали похожие на рев звуки.
Есть и другая теория: керлинг от английского существительного «curl», что в переводе означает «завиток». Похожий след оставляет после себя камень на ледяной поверхности.
Для керлинга использовали камни разных весов. Некоторые соревнования проходили с камнями, весящими всего пару килограммов. Другие брали тяжеленные камни от 50 килограммов! Самым тяжёлым был снаряд, который весил 58,5кг. Сейчас установлен общий вес для всех камней. Это 44 фунта, примерно 20 кг.
